Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before (and after) you download. Something missing? Get in touch — we answer.

Is Rego free?
Rego is free to download, and you can start saving places right away. An optional upgrade unlocks an unlimited library — see the App Store listing for current pricing. Every core feature works the same for everyone, and your data is never locked behind a payment: your library always stays viewable, searchable and exportable.
Where is my data stored? Does Rego sync between devices?
Your library is stored on your devices and synced privately through your own iCloud account. There's no Rego account to create, no sync switch to find, and no Rego server holding your places. Install Rego on a new iPhone or iPad signed into the same iCloud account, and your library arrives on its own.
Can I import my saved places from Google Maps?
Yes. Export your places from Google My Maps (or request them via Google Takeout) and open the resulting KML or KMZ file in Rego. Rego also imports GPX files from GPS apps and devices, and Google Earth files. For individual places, it's even easier: share them straight from the Google Maps app with Open Location in Rego.
Can I export my Rego data?
Yes — everything, any time. Export collections as a lossless native Rego archive (every photo and track file included, so a restore reproduces your library exactly), or as KML, KMZ or GPX for Google Earth, Google My Maps, GPS devices and other apps. Your data is never trapped — that's a product promise, not a feature.
Does Rego work offline?
The core library works without a connection:
  • All your saved places, notes, photos and tracks remain available.
  • GPS provides your current location, distances and directions with no data connection.
  • You can save a new place from your current location.
  • Previously viewed map areas may remain cached.
Online place search, fresh map imagery, sharing and sync need a connection.
I used Rego 2 — what happens to my library?
It comes with you. Updating to the new Rego on the same device migrates your existing library automatically — once, with nothing to do. Old Rego 2 Dropbox backups can also be restored directly from the Files app (Settings → Restore from Backup).
Is there an iPad version? What about Mac?
Yes — Rego is made for iPad, with a Photos-style sidebar that puts your folders, collections and pin colors one tap away. A native Mac app is in development, distributed through the Mac App Store and sharing the same private iCloud-synced library as your iPhone and iPad.
How do I save a place from Apple Maps or Google Maps?
Tap Share on the place, then choose Open Location in Rego. Rego reads the location — it even untangles the short links the Google Maps app shares — and opens a pre-filled editor so you can name it, file it and save. Nothing is ever saved silently; you always see what was captured before it enters your library.
Does saving a place make it public?
Never. Rego is private by default: saving a place publishes nothing, there are no ads and no tracking, and there's no social feed. Sharing and exporting only happen when you explicitly choose them.
What's the difference between a folder and a collection?
A folder gives a place a single home — like folders on your Mac. A collection is freeform: one place can belong to many collections at once ("Restaurants" and "Lisbon 2027"), or to none. Stars and pin colors work independently on top of both, and removing a place from a collection never deletes it from your library.
Can Rego record my route or give turn-by-turn directions?
No — by design. Rego stores places and imported GPX tracks; it doesn't record your movement or replace specialist navigation apps. When you're ready to go somewhere, Rego hands off to Apple Maps or your preferred navigation app in one tap.
I have data in another app or format. Can I bring it into Rego?
If you can get your data into KML, KMZ or GPX — the formats most map and GPS tools export — Rego can import it. That covers Google My Maps, Google Earth, most GPS apps and many bookmarking tools. If you're stuck with an unusual format, contact us and we'll try to help.
